The Project

As part of a New Product Development strategy, our team tackled a paradox in modern digital fitness: while the US market has surpassed 100 million active users, most platforms remain utilitarian trackers rather than true community hubs. Concurrently, widespread cultural discourse, viral trends, and media coverage had begun reframing Strava as something bigger: a dynamic local pulse of a city’s active lifestyle and an organic hub for modern dating and socialization. With Strava holding a 13% share of the $2B US fitness app landscape, our objective was to formalize this emergent behavior—architecting, validating, and modeling a dedicated feature set that transforms solo performance tracking into hyper-local, real-world connection.

The Strategic Challenge & Empathy Research

Through empathy interviews with Gen Z runners, a clear friction point emerged: existing "social" features in fitness apps felt empty. Users reported broadcasting workouts to large, impersonal feeds or exporting data to other social networks because Strava lacked native tools to coordinate hyper-local connections.

We defined our core target persona—"Nick, the Run-Club Renegade"—an ambitious, schedule-driven young professional seeking consistent workout partners to de-stress, hold him accountable, and build belonging without the awkwardness of joining massive 1,000+ person clubs.

Concept Testing & Optimization

We developed and tested three distinct product concepts via consumer surveys:

  • Strava Spark: Romantic, pace-matched dating.

  • Strava Mate: Competitive, 1-on-1 partner leaderboards.

  • Strava Connect: Small, local squad coordination and social meetups.

Top-2-Box validation data revealed that while Strava Mate indexed highest on uniqueness (89%), Strava Connect won on purchase intent (59%) and overall liking (89%). By blending Mate’s friendly accountability with Connect’s community focus, we finalized the product blueprint.

The Product: Strava Connect

Strava Connect re-architects the platform from passive broadcasting to active local engagement:

  • Smart Matching Engine: Goal- and route-based algorithms pairing users with compatible local pace partners.

  • Activity-First Profiles: Automatically generated profiles showcasing pace, distance preferences, and training goals.

  • Event-First Meetups & Squads: Integration with local restaurants and bars (e.g., Happy Camper in Denver) as structured start/end points, driving post-run socializing and B2B hospitality foot traffic.

  • Curated Recommendations: An algorithmic feed surfacing nearby runners and small groups rather than static follower lists.

Go-to-Market, Monetization & Sizing the Opportunity

  • Pricing & Packaging: Positioned as an accessible $0.99/month add-on (with an automatic 30-day trial) or bundled into corporate wellness B2B offerings to build authentic workplace fitness culture.

  • Integrated Promotion: In-app feature gating and onboarding banners ("Find Your Crew"), local ambassador stories, and UGC hashtags (#FindYourCrew).

  • Financial Impact: Modeling a 15% conversion among paid users and a 1.5% upsell on free tiers, Strava Connect was projected to capture 657,000 subscribers and generate an $8M revenue lift (+3%) in Year 1.

Results:

This was a long project, with many challenges in terms of thinking strategically about what really mattered when it came to a consumer want and filling a vacancy. We had to answer hard questions about what it really means to innovate, fill a gap, and be the entrepreneur of our own idea within an organization.
